Environmental Policy
Our commitment to minimising environmental impact
Contents
Principles
CM Beyer Limited recognises that all business activity has an environmental impact and that we have a responsibility to manage and minimise that impact. Our environmental policy is guided by four principles:
- Prevention over remediation — it is better to avoid environmental harm than to mitigate it after the fact
- Continuous improvement — we set targets, measure progress, and raise the bar as our capacity allows
- Proportionality — our commitments are proportionate to our size, sector, and actual impact
- Transparency — we report honestly on both our progress and our shortcomings
Energy and Carbon
Remote-first operations. CM Beyer does not maintain a permanent office. Our team works remotely, with co-working spaces and meeting rooms used on an as-needed basis. This eliminates the baseline energy consumption of a dedicated office — heating, cooling, lighting, and equipment running continuously regardless of occupancy.
Equipment. Team members are encouraged to use energy-efficient devices and to enable power-saving settings. When company equipment is procured, energy efficiency ratings are considered alongside performance and cost.
Carbon awareness. We do not currently measure our carbon footprint with certified precision — the cost of formal carbon auditing is disproportionate to our size. However, we make operational choices that are consistent with carbon reduction: digital over physical, remote over commuted, public transport over private vehicles, and video calls over flights where the meeting objective can be achieved remotely.
Digital Infrastructure
As a digital-first business, our most significant infrastructure footprint is our web hosting, email, cloud services, and software platforms. We have selected providers with published environmental commitments:
We optimise our website for performance — compressed assets, efficient code, minimal unnecessary scripts — which reduces the energy required to serve and load pages. Our website is hosted on servers within the EU, subject to European environmental regulations.
Travel and Transport
Our travel policy applies to all business travel by directors, employees, and contractors acting on behalf of CM Beyer:
- Video first. If a meeting objective can be achieved by video call, the meeting should be held by video call. Travel is justified only when physical presence adds value that cannot be replicated remotely.
- Public transport preference. Where travel is necessary within the UK, rail is preferred over driving, and driving is preferred over domestic flights. Taxis and private hire vehicles are used only where public transport is impractical.
- International travel. Flights between the UK and Australia are minimised through asynchronous working practices, time-zone-aware scheduling, and the use of video conferencing for regular operational coordination. International travel is reserved for relationship-critical meetings, client workshops, and strategic planning sessions.
- Accommodation. When overnight stays are required, we preference hotels with published sustainability policies.
Waste and Materials
Paper elimination. CM Beyer operates a near-paperless workflow. Contracts are executed digitally via DocuSign. Invoices, reports, and deliverables are produced and transmitted electronically. Internal documents are stored in cloud systems, not physical files. We do not maintain physical archives.
Electronic waste. When company-owned equipment reaches end of life, we follow the WEEE Regulations and dispose of electronic waste through certified recycling channels. Where equipment is still functional but no longer suitable for our use, we donate or resell it rather than disposing of it.
Marketing materials. We minimise the production of physical marketing materials. Where physical collateral is required for events or client meetings, we use recycled or sustainably sourced paper, avoid plastic packaging and lamination, and order conservatively to reduce waste from overproduction.
Responsible Procurement
Environmental impact is a factor in all procurement decisions. We preference suppliers who demonstrate environmental responsibility through:
- Published environmental policies or ISO 14001 certification
- Use of renewable energy in their operations
- Sustainable sourcing of materials
- Carbon reduction targets and progress reporting
- Responsible waste management practices
We do not require formal environmental certification from every supplier — this would be impractical for a business of our size. However, where two suppliers offer comparable products or services at comparable prices, environmental credentials are a differentiating factor in our decision.
Targets and Measurement
We set the following environmental targets for the current financial year:
As the Company grows and our environmental footprint becomes more material, we will implement formal carbon measurement and consider science-based target setting.
Policy Review
This environmental policy is reviewed annually by the Director and updated as necessary. The next scheduled review is May 2027. Questions or suggestions may be directed to compliance@cmbeyer.co.uk.
